CYNTHIA SPANOULIS

Cynthia Whitbred-Spanoulis President and CEO Virginia Aquarium

Cynthia Whitbred-Spanoulis is president and CEO of the Virginia Aquarium and executive director of the Virginia Aquarium Foundation. In her role as the aquarium’s president, she has demonstrated extraordinary leadership and vision. Under her guidance, the organisation excels in its mission and generates a substantial economic impact, contributing $250 million annually to the local economy.

Whitbred-Spanoulis’ dedication to furthering the Virginia Aquarium’s mission is evident in her strategic initiatives and innovative programmes. The aquarium is dedicated to the exploration and conservation of marine life. Featuring more than 8,000 animals from 300 different species, it provides visitors with an immersive experience by showing a variety of aquatic habitats. Guests can observe a diverse range of marine creatures, including sharks, otters and sea turtles.

The aquarium’s mission is to foster understanding and appreciation for the ocean’s biodiversity and the importance of conservation efforts. Whitbred-Spanoulis is passionate about environmental stewardship and education and has expanded the aquarium’s outreach and impact.

“We are helping educate people about changes they can make. We are giving them opportunities to make changes in their daily lives, communities, choices, and the broader sense of conservation. The aquarium educates them and gives them tools to effect change rather than wallowing,” she told blooloop.

“Those tools and education are why people love visiting and working here. It’s a really exciting time for us to help make changes in the world that will benefit our local community and the broader world.”

Beyond the Virginia Aquarium, Cynthia Whitbred-Spanoulis serves on the board of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), the global alliance of regional associations, national federations, and institutions. At WAZA, she plays a key role in shaping global standards for animal welfare and conservation.

“Spanoulis exemplifies the qualities of a top professional in the zoo and aquarium industry,” said a nominator.
