Jack Baker Discovery and Learning Associate Royal Zoological Society of Scotland

Jack Baker is a discovery and learning associate at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Edinburgh Zoo, where he runs outdoor conservation education classes as part of the organisation’s Conservation Action Team (CAT) programme. In addition to this, he is also the creator of a popular podcast called Pangolin: The Conservation Podcast.

Baker has a passion for conservation communication and gained an MSc in Conservation Studies from St Andrews University in 2020, before beginning a PhD with The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) and the University of Edinburgh, where he will further explore conservation communication and the role of collections. In a previous role, Baker worked with RBGE where he ran the ‘Mighty Oaks Holiday Club’ at both The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and Logan Botanic Garden.

In order to spread more conservation awareness, Baker created Pangolin: The Conservation Podcast in 2020, in which he shines a light on under-appreciated conservation stories. Now in its fourth season, the podcast has been listened to almost 30,000 times in over 85 countries and has featured guests from some of the most prominent conservation organisations, alongside experts from the UK and beyond.

Baker works as both host & producer of the podcast, which is published weekly to all major streaming platforms. Previous guests include speakers from The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, the Marine Conservation Society, the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, ICAS, and many more. He also hosts a spin-off show, ‘ReZOO: The Zoo Review Podcast’.

In addition, Baker was recently selected as one of the 2022 EE ’30 Under 30′ by the North American Association of Environmental Education.

One nominator said: “In his young career, Jack has already managed to share his passion for conservation with so many. I am confident he will use his growing influence to continue to inspire others in the future.”
