Dartmoor Zoo in Devon has announced David Gibson as its new CEO after the departure of Coral Jonas, chief operating officer, late last year.
Gibson previously worked as assistant chief executive at The Deep, a £54m award-winning aquarium in Hull. He has also served as executive director of Fota Wildlife Park in Ireland, and as managing director of the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.
“We are delighted to have someone of David’s calibre joining as CEO of Dartmoor Zoological Society,” said Benjamin James, Dartmoor Zoo chairperson.
“David’s appointment marks a significant milestone in our development. The trustees and I look forward to working with David to continue our planned infrastructure improvements and the development of our collection plan.”Â
New CEO to work on zoo’s development
Gibson said he is “delighted and excited to take over the reins at Dartmoor Zoo”. He added: “I don’t doubt that there will be many challenges ahead, but I have every confidence that with the support of the trustees and staff of the charity we can help this fantastic zoo achieve its full potential.”
Gibson has extensive knowledge of charitable organisations. Per a press release, one of his proudest achievements is his contribution to the creation of The Deep.
Dartmoor Zoo’s new CEO role was created after its founder, Ben Mee, stepped back from his operational duties to focus on other projects.
Clare Lee, Dartmoor Zoo’s head of compliance and resources, added: “David’s knowledge and previous experience is perfect for this role, and he has a huge amount to offer the charity.”
Established in 2007, the 33-acre Dartmoor Zoo site is home to big cats and other mammals, as well as birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.
