The Florida Aquarium has announced that developer Darryl Shaw will lead a $40 million capital campaign to fund its first major expansion since opening in 1995.
The fundraising effort, called ‘Sea Change’, is part of the aquarium’s upcoming expansion, which includes an outdoor exhibit for California sea lions.
The project also includes a special exhibit gallery, a multi-species gallery with puffins, and an African penguin habitat.
“The Florida Aquarium is a community treasure and its impact goes far beyond our region’s borders,” said Shaw.

“Having a vibrant, thriving cultural attraction like the Florida Aquarium enhances our quality of life and places us on an international stage,” he added.
“I have no doubt the support for their continued growth will be well received by the community.”
The expansion is scheduled for completion in 2025. The first phase, due to complete this year, will turn an existing ballroom space into a special exhibit gallery. The second phase, set for completion in 2024, includes a 45,000-gallon habitat for puffins.
The third and most ambitious phase includes three interconnected sea lion spaces. There will be a large main habitat and an animal encounter habitat, as well as a presentation space with underwater viewing and overlook seating.

“As Tampa Bay grows, we continue to reimagine our impact and ways to expand our reach across the region and nation,” said Roger Germann, the Florida Aquarium’s president and CEO.
“This expansion will bring rich and lasting experiences and education to our neighbors and visitors from across the world and supports our purpose to save marine wildlife in our backyard and throughout Florida.”
The project was led by architectural design firm Space Haus. The company’s clients include the Shedd Aquarium, National Aquarium of New Zealand, Dallas City Zoo and Kansas City Zoo.
