WAZA counts down to its 74th Annual Conference in Buenos Aires

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the global alliance of regional associations, national federations, zoos and aquariums, is looking forward to the 74th WAZA Annual Conference in Buenos Aires next month.

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) is pleased to announce that its 74th Annual Conference is now only one month away, and registration is still open for those wishing to get their hands on tickets. The event takes place at the Grand View Hotel and Convention Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from the 3rd – 7th November 2019.

This year’s event is running under the theme of ‘Together for Nature’ and will be hosted by Fundación Temaikèn. A wide range of professional development, learning and networking opportunities will feature in the programme.

Keynote speakers

Together for nature Logo WAZA 74th Annual ConferenceThe conference will include world-renowned speakers, including Dr Claudio Campagna, a conservation scientist at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Argentina. He will deliver a keynote on ‘Conservation of Patagonian Sea and Antartica’ which will look at marine conservation, animal behaviour and environmental ethics.

Dr Marcela Uhart, director of the Karen C. Drayer Wildlife Health Center’s Latin America Program and respected wildlife veterinarian and wildlife health researcher will give a keynote speech exploring the role that zoos and aquariums can play in changing human behaviour to achieve biodiversity conservation.

Also delivering a keynote will be Dr Mark Barone, Population Council, senior scientist at the Population Council. He will look at ‘Putting Human Population Growth into the Conservation Conversation.’

During a speech by Dr Arnaud Desbiez, conservation biologist and project coordinator of the Giant Armadillo Project, and the Anteaters and Highways Project, attendees will discover more about these two conservation projects.

Conference Workshops

Two interesting workshops will also take place at the conference, on the 3rd of November. The Palm Oil Activation and Awareness workshop, from 1 pm – 5 pm, will take a closer look at the issues around palm oil. Attendees can register for a place here.

Then from 2 pm  – 3.30 pm the Crisis Communications Preparedness Workshop will be hosted by Jill Allread, CEO of Public Communications Inc. This aims to provide participants with strategies and tactics to better prepare their team for issues that zoos and aquariums often face. This workshop is limited to 16 people and requires pre-booking as well as a minimum donation.
