Balashi Beer Experience Aruba

At the Balashi Beer Experience Aruba, two narratives are woven into one 90-minute visitor journey: the story of Balashi, Aruba’s iconic beer brand, and how its beer is made, together with the story of Aruba, its landscapes, culture, people and way of life. Developed and realised by Sandenburg Experiences for MetaCorp, the experience brings these two stories to life through a fictional Aruban family, immersive shows, media, themed environments, interactives and live hosts. Rather than simply telling visitors the story, each of these elements allows them to experience and participate in it.

At the centre is Buchi, Balashi’s brewmaster, a warm, approachable and proudly Aruban family man who becomes the visitor’s guide. His entire family works at Balashi, a detail gradually revealed as the journey unfolds. Buchi reappears throughout the experience in different settings and roles, creating a playful continuity that connects twelve scenes into one story.

The adventure follows the rhythm of a working day with Buchi. It begins at sunrise at his traditional Cunucu House, where his family gathers for breakfast on the veranda. The Mindset Show then sweeps visitors across Aruba, from white sandy shores and the Hooiberg to the Gold Mine and Arikok National Park. Buchi leads guests through the ingredients behind Balashi, beginning with fresh water made from Caribbean seawater, followed by detours to the barley fields of Scotland and the hops of Germany. The journey returns to Aruba for yeast and brewing, building towards a climax in the Brewing Show inside the iconic golden beer tank. Here, visitors are playfully drawn into the brewing process and, in a sense, are “brewed” themselves. In bottling, another layer of Buchi’s family story is revealed. After a day of discovery and “work” with Buchi, the story ends in a traditional rum shop, where guests enjoy a Balashi with Buchi and his family, before flowing into the Balashi Flagship Store and Balashi Bar.

The narrative is deliberately layered. Three directed shows communicate the essential story in a powerful shared format, ensuring that every visitor receives the key narrative. Between these moments, free flow environments let guests determine how deeply they want to explore. Media content, physical theming, interactive exhibits and 2D information layers approach the same subject from different angles. Buchi may explain how seawater is purified, for example, while an exhibit nearby lets visitors explore that subject in greater depth.

This makes the story both guided and self directed. Buchi regularly gives visitors a call to action, inviting them to find the next ingredient, enter a new environment or continue the adventure. Each scene introduces a different scenography, visual language and mode of interaction, creating repeated moments of discovery and curiosity about what lies around the next corner.

The experience was developed for a broad audience. The creative process considered personas including young visitors from Venezuela and the East Coast of the United States, Gen Z and Millennial groups of friends, US baby boomers, Aruban couples and cruise passengers. The core media narrative is told in English for the predominantly international audience, while visual storytelling, physical environments, interactives and live hosts provide additional ways to engage with the story.

Live hosts add another important storytelling layer. Visitor facing employees were trained in hospitality, storytelling, guest personas and how to adapt their interaction to different audiences. Instead of following a rigid script, they work with core story points and are encouraged to add their own authentic experiences, local stories and hidden gems of Aruba. The same narrative can therefore feel different for an older couple, a group of friends or a local Aruban visitor, while remaining part of the same story world.

The innovation lies in this storytelling architecture. A clear character led narrative gives every visitor a shared storyline, while layered media, theming, interaction and human storytelling allow each guest to discover it at a different depth and in a different way. The Balashi Beer Experience does not simply explain how beer is brewed. It intertwines the story of Balashi and how its beer is made with the wider story of Aruba, creating one participatory narrative that visitors can travel through, interact with and ultimately become part of.
