BASE Xperiential helps redefine experiential venues with HoloTheater

Versatile solution delivers immersive content for museums, planetariums, shopping centres, zoos, and more

BASE Xperiential HoloTheater

BASE Xperiential, a creator of holographic and immersive cinema experiences for museums, zoos, aquariums, attractions, and live venues, is addressing a demand in the attractions sector, as immersive experiences increasingly become an expected feature of modern museums, science centres, shopping centres, and destination attractions.

For operators, the challenge is to create immersive environments that are visually striking, simple to operate, adaptable to unique spaces, and sustainable in the long run. Base Xperiential designed the HoloTheater as a direct response to this, aiming to offer a complete, start-to-finish solution rather than a one-off attraction.

Designed, engineered, delivered, and supported by Base Xperiential, this purpose-built immersive theatre combines giant-screen cinema, panoramic films, and cinematic special effects with larger-than-life holograms that step off the screen and appear directly in front of audiences - all without glasses or goggles.

HoloTheater in action at MODS

Last year, the firm launched the East Coast's first freestanding HoloTheater. Debuting at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Opening with the popular Dinosaur Discoveries: A Holographic Adventure, this project shows how immersive learning centres can monetise underused space while captivating audiences with innovative storytelling.

"The HoloTheater brings our belief in immersive storytelling to life, using cutting-edge technology to deepen how audiences experience science," says Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of the Museum of Discovery and Science.

"We created a dedicated theater and partnered with BaseXperiential to deliver an experience aligned with our mission of connecting people to inspiring science."

This is a real-world example of how the HoloTheater can be custom-designed to fit an existing venue while supporting evolving programming needs over time

While traditional immersive installations tend to lack flexibility over time, BASE Xperiential's solution is a flexible theatre environment designed for long-term programming, repeated visits, and content rotation—without the need for constant rebuilds or reinvestment.

Chairman & CEO of BASE Xperiential, Brian Becker, says: “We designed HoloTheater as a complete, start-to-finish solution—customized for each venue and built for long-term programming rather than temporary installs.

"Our goal is to make immersive storytelling powerful for audiences and effortless for operators.”

A versatile solution

The HoloTheater offers a wide range of programming within a single HoloTheater environment, including educational films, natural-world storytelling, seasonal and holiday content, short-form experiences, and special presentations that encourage repeat visitation throughout the year.

Titles include Dinosaur Discoveries and Ocean Giants, with more films to be announced. Content is produced by MacGillivray Freeman Films & BASE Xperiential.

Each HoloTheater is custom-designed to the specific size, shape, and configuration of a venue’s available space. Individual projects benefit from flexibility in footprint, layout, and audience flow, allowing the experience to integrate naturally into museums, malls, and visitor destinations.

The product has a compact footprint of approximately 1,000 square feet and modest ceiling height requirements. The projection system can also be designed to quickly fly in and out, allowing versatile use of the space.

BASE Xperiential’s expert team manages the entire process, from concept and design through fabrication, installation, and commissioning. This guarantees consistency, quality, and straightforward deployment for venue partners.

Post-installation, the HoloTheater requires minimal staff input, featuring push-to-play operation, user-friendly systems, and the ability for venue teams to run shows without specialised technical skills.

Additionally, the company offers ongoing technical support, remote monitoring, and maintenance management, enabling venues to focus on programming and guest experience rather than daily technical management.

Futureproofing venues' content strategies

As a flexible immersive theatre, HoloTheater is built to adapt, grow, and stay relevant. It is designed for long-term deployment and supports evolving content strategies while remaining adaptable to future programming needs.

BASE Xperiential sees the product as the next evolution of out-of-home immersive film experiences—following planetariums and giant-screen cinemas—designed to adapt to future content formats, audience behaviour, and venue strategies.

At a time when audiences want engaging experiences that they can share with each other, it creates storytelling without the need for wearable devices.

BASE Xperiential combines immersive storytelling, customised design, automated operations, and full-service support to turn each HoloTheater into a durable, multi-year asset for cultural and commercial venues.

“Every HoloTheater is designed specifically for the space it lives in," adds Becker. "From concept through delivery and ongoing support, we handle the complexity so our partners can focus on content and guests.

“HoloTheater is essentially an automated immersive theater—push to play, no specialized skills required. We provide the technology, the support, and the maintenance framework so venues can operate with confidence.”
