Blue Mar Basins by Martin Aquatic is a new technology for designing and operating large scale swimming amenities unlike anything else on the market. Using a proprietary—and now patented—process for filtration, automation, and water distribution, amenities with a Blue Mar Basins system can accommodate limitless programming capabilities including swim-up bars, floating obstacle courses, light watersports, and even integrated wave generation technology for surf. What’s more, these large lagoons are entirely swimmable, requiring no maximum depth.
While Martin Aquatic has been designing large bodies of water following similar engineering principles for a few years, the full evolution of the Blue Mar Basins technology made its debut with the opening of Carnival’s private destination, Celebration Key on Grand Bahama.
The two freshwater lagoons represent the largest in the Caribbean, spanning a total of nearly seven acres. Since opening in July, the destination has been welcoming several thousand visitors every day, and it’s expected that more than 1 million cruise passengers will visit Celebration Key before the end of 2025.
The technology powering these lagoons was custom developed by Martin Aquatic and American-based manufacturers to create an entirely new standard of filtration system, robust submersible pool lights, and automation controls for superior water distribution and program management. These technologies came after years of R&D, studying other commercial equipment and how those would fail to accommodate the demands of these massive bodies of water. The creation of these new technologies launched a new division within Martin Aquatic, Blue Mar Basins, that can supply this equipment for various other projects and applications.

One of its other benefits is how Blue Mas Basins systems are pre-assembled in the factory. The modules, controls, and lighting packages are shipped in batches for easier owner quality control and installation by the local contractor. The components are delivered pre-assembled on site in a plug-and-play fashion, allowing pre-certified and trained construction crews to install complex modules seamlessly in a fraction of the time.
In the development of the Blue Mar Basins system, Martin Aquatic created proprietary ‘smart’ controllers, the BMB Command Centre, for managing all of the chemical and mechanical equipment. For days with higher capacities, the system is designed to run more optimally and use a proprietary AI Algorithm to adjust the water based on historical trends. This system allows the basin to take advantage of historical learning with active environmental and weather conditions to optimise chemical and power usage for the design day. It is also designed to detect patterns in water quality changes, helping to proactively treat water that could be harmful to guests. The tracking of the water and active learning by the system is just one of the innovations that Martin Aquatic has deployed.
