LEXRA
Bob Cooney is executive director of the Location-Based Entertainment XR Association (LEXRA), a trade association for companies working in location-based extended reality (XR). He founded The VR Collective, an industry publication covering location-based virtual reality, and is the author of Real Money from Virtual Reality.
Cooney began his career in location-based entertainment in 1991, when he founded Laser Storm, a laser tag company that appeared on the Inc. 500 list before going public on Nasdaq. The company developed licensed laser tag games based on Stargate and X-Men. Cooney also worked with Edison Brothers to bring Virtuality VR centres to shopping malls across the US. He later joined the founding executive team at Global VR, which launched the VR Vortek arcade system.
His subsequent roles included vice-president of marketing and business development at digital jukebox provider Ecast and chief operating officer of interactive entertainment company NTN Buzztime.
Since 2015, Cooney has focused on the location-based VR sector, advising developers, manufacturers and operators on business strategy and market development. He founded the VR Arcade and Attraction Summit, which brought together VR developers, manufacturers and amusement operators. He now works through LEXRA to support collaboration across the location-based XR industry.
