Dennis Nagel

Dennis Nagel serves as senior director of zoological operations and conservation at Miral Experiences, and also as zoological director at Al Ain Zoo, the UAE’s national zoo.

“In these roles, he is leading the transformation of one of the region’s most important zoological institutions by strengthening animal welfare, zoological operations, conservation, safety, and organizational development,” said one person who nominated Nagel.

Another said: “His influence extends far beyond day-to-day zoo operations. Dennis has established strategic partnerships with leading conservation organisations, zoological institutions and international universities to position Al Ain Zoo as a regional hub for species conservation, scientific collaboration and professional development.”

Nagel is a member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission’s Conservation Planning Specialist Group (CPSG), contributing to international conservation planning and collaboration. Throughout his career, he has worked with zoos and wildlife organizations in multiple countries, supporting master planning, habitat design, collection planning, operational excellence, and institutional capacity building.

“What makes Dennis particularly deserving of recognition is his ability to integrate conservation, animal welfare, operational excellence and organisational transformation into a single vision for the modern zoo,” said another person who nominated Nagel.

“His work demonstrates that successful zoological institutions are built not only through excellent animal care, but through strong leadership, international collaboration, scientific credibility and an empowered workforce.”
