Relative Scale

An immersive and interactive media studio creating digital experiences that connect people with stories, places, and ideas.

Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, Relative Scale works with clients and creative partners across the United States. The team combines strategy, creative direction, UX and UI design, custom software development, media integration, prototyping, testing, and installation to support projects from early ideas through opening day and beyond.

Their mission is to add meaning and fulfillment to the human experience. They bring together storytelling, design, technology, media, and physical space to create experiences that are engaging, intuitive, and memorable. From immersive environments and interactive exhibits to multi-screen installations, games, virtual reality, and linear media programs, their work is designed to invite participation and make audiences feel like part of the story.

Interactive storytelling for museums and attractions

The company create experiences for museums, cultural and heritage attractions, sports and entertainment venues, branded destinations, and other places where audiences come to explore, learn, play, and connect. Their work spans a wide range of public-facing environments, from intimate gallery interactives to large-scale immersive and experiential installations.

At the Beyond the Battle Museum in Gettysburg, Relative Scale contributed to Caught in the Crossfire, an enclosed farmhouse experience exploring the Battle of Gettysburg from a civilian perspective. An 11.2 audio mix works alongside physical effects and lighting to build a multisensory interpretation of events. Other museum clients and projects include the National WASP WWII Museum, Andy Griffith Museum, Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, Anniston Museum of Natural History and Customs House Museum & Cultural Centre.

Connecting visitors with collections

Relative Scale also creates digital tools that allow visitors to explore large or evolving collections. These can include searchable archives, interactive timelines, multimedia databases and applications supported by custom content management systems.

At Emory University's Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, & Rare Book Library, for example, the studio developed interactive installations giving visitors access to collection material, videos, timelines and wayfinding information. At the University of North Carolina, a CMS-driven interactive enables visitors to explore the history, players, teams and statistics of Carolina Women's Basketball.

At the center of their work is a simple idea: technology should never be the point of the experience. It should help tell the story, encourage curiosity, create moments of discovery, and give people a reason to engage with a place and with one another.

Services and expertise

Relative Scale supports projects from early concept development through design, production and implementation. Its services include audience and content research, experience and interface design, motion graphics and animation, video and sound production, projection mapping, AR, VR and mixed reality, touchscreen and gesture-based interactives, app development, content management systems and analytics.

VYV

Media server technology, projection mapping and real-time tracking for immersive shows, installations and live entertainment.

Founded in 2004, VYV is a Montreal-based technology company with offices in the USA and UK, creating advanced video display systems for the worlds of art, entertainment, live production and immersive environments. Operating at the intersection of technology, creativity and performance, the company develops media servers and technical tools that help designers, producers and creative teams bring ambitious visual ideas to life. For more than two decades, VYV systems have powered permanent shows, attractions and spectaculars across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

VYV's technology has always been shaped by the demands of permanent shows and attractions — productions that must run flawlessly, day after day, for years. For theme parks, museums, cruise lines, brands and public destinations, VYV offers the specialist tools and expertise needed to transform buildings, stages, objects and environments into precise, responsive and visually striking canvases, and to keep them performing at that standard throughout a long operating life.

"Themed entertainment is unforgiving — a show has to look as good on night three thousand as it did on opening night. We build for that reality. Our team understands every layer of the system, from the calibration algorithms to the reality operators face, and that depth is what lets us say yes to ideas other providers have to walk away from."

Drew Atienza, Director, VYV-US

Products

VYV's product suite includes PHOTON, XENON, TACHYON, ALBION, COPERNIC, and dedicated hardware solutions. These technologies support everything from single-projector environments to complex multi-projection environments, high-resolution LED wall systems, architectural mapping, uncompressed media playback, 3D tracking, show marking, and accurate pixel delivery for demanding productions.

  • PHOTON – The all-in-one media server platform for large-scale immersive installations, live events and permanent attractions. PHOTON combines high-resolution video playback, a built-in node-based effects engine, auto-alignment projection mapping, real-time compositing and synchronized show control in a single system.
  • XENON – A specialist projection mapping and uncompressed media playback solution built for architectural and object-based mapping projects, along with large-format LEDwall systems. XENON provides advanced automatic geometric correction, edge blending and precision alignment tools for transforming buildings, stages and physical environments into dynamic visual canvases.
  • TACHYON – A compact, cost-effective and reliable media playback system designed for smaller installations and distributed media applications. TACHYON delivers high-qualityvideo playback with a streamlined workflow and easy deployment.
  • ALBION – A professional 3D tracking system that enables operators and creative teams to accurately track moving scenery, performers, props and puppets in live performance, providing PSN tracking data to any show system.
  • COPERNIC – A family of compact 3D-positioning optical markers designed to work withALBION and VYV's other tracking and calibration systems. These IR emitters track the position and movement of performers, screens, scenery and props almost invisibly, and integrate discreetly into most structural elements to provide real-time data for the automatic calibration of projectors and camera systems.

What sets VYV apart?

  • Automatic projector calibration at scale. PHOTON automatically calibrates systems of more than 150 projectors and keeps them aligned through daily operation. For a permanent attraction, this means consistent image quality year after year without flying in specialists to re-align the system — a meaningful difference in long-term operating cost.
  • Projection that follows the action. ALBION tracks performers, props and moving scenery in real time so projected content stays locked to its target. VYV has event-tracked deforming surfaces: for Cirque du Soleil's Drawn to Life, the system followed oversized animation sheets as they twisted and bent mid-performance, alongside 17tracked props and costumes.
  • Custom engineering when the brief demands it. When a creative vision goes beyond what any off-the-shelf product can do, VYV's in-house R & D team develops the show-specific software and hardware features to deliver it — capabilities that frequently become part of the product line.-
  • Built for handover. Automated backup programming protects show integrity in live operation, and project-specific documentation, training and international remote support mean an operator's own team can run the show with confidence.

Projects

VYV works across theme parks, stadiums and outdoor events, touring productions, nighttime spectaculars, permanent shows, rides, architectural and public-space installations, theatre and indoor spectacles. Its portfolio includes large-scale projection, LED playback and tracking work for concerts, ceremonies, public artworks, theatrical productions and themed entertainment, demonstrating the company's relevance to immersive entertainment, cultural destinations andexperience-led venues.

Highlights include Cirque du Soleil's Drawn to Life, a permanent show at Disney Springs in Orlando; Chimelong's Dragon Show; Dragone's resident spectaculars La Perle in Dubai; Cirquedu Soleil’s ECHO, a bigtop touring show and The House of Dancing Water in Macau; CitéMémoire, the permanent projection circuit through Old Montreal; and Touch with LighthouseImmersive. VYV's technology has also powered ceremonies and public spectacles such as TheQueen's Platinum Jubilee and The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, as well as touring and residency productions for artists including Bruno Mars, Jennifer Lopez and Roger Waters.

Clients include Cirque du Soleil, Dragone, Chimelong, Ex Machina, Lighthouse Immersive, and Dreamlab Immersive, among others, protected by non-disclosure agreements.

Services

Alongside its technology, VYV provides à la carte services across the full project lifecycle, from early design and engineering through production, product customisation, support, maintenance, and training. These include projection studies, calibration studies, tracking studies, system schematics, third-party design review, 3D acquisition, system installation, show programming, documentation, and training.

On The Stage

On The Stage

The ticketing, marketing, and revenue engine built for visitor attractions and location-based entertainment.

On The Stage (OTS) is a full-stack ticketing, marketing, and venue management platform that gives visitor attractions and location-based entertainment operators the tools to sell tickets, promote events, manage customers, and improve business results from a single platform.

Purpose-built for the realities of live entertainment operators, OTS offers mobile-first, white-labeled online ticketing with one-click Apple Pay and Google Pay checkout that’s proven to increase conversion rates and boost order values.

Time-based entry, dynamic pricing, real-time capacity management, VIP group sales, and flexible ticketing options unlock streamlined event management, efficient marketing, and increased attendance rates.

Dynamic offers, upgrades, and add-ons increase order values while augmenting the customer experience, and distribution via 60+ OTAs help to reach new audiences.

Native audience segmentation leverages operators’ first-party data to maximize ROAS, improve customer return rates, and reduce customer acquisition costs, and integrations with leading CRM platforms unlock advanced marketing flows using OTS first-party segments.

Party Pass collects contact information and pre-event waivers for every attendee in a group sale, helping to grow first-party contact lists while speeding up check-ins.

Always-on automated marketing flows automatically deliver the right message to the right customers at the right time, leading to increased sales, higher customer retention rates, and a higher lifetime value for customers. Real-time dashboards showcase sales, revenue, conversion, and funnel performance, and OTS account teams provide hands-on continuous optimization support to improve sales flows and improve business outcomes.

While OTS began as a solution to support performing arts organizations and educators, it has intentionally expanded to address the unique needs of the visitor attractions market. Thousands of organizations run on the platform today, ranging from single-venue operators to multi-site attractions with high-volume, timed-entry programming.

From large-scale location-based entertainment operators to museums, science centers, zoos, aquariums, water parks, and theme parks, OTS is built to deliver results for any operator that offers ticketed, timed-entry experiences.

The proof: when PATH Entertainment Group, producer of Monopoly Lifesized and The Paddington Bear Experience, needed a ticketing solution built for high-volume immersive attractions, they moved to OTS and saw conversion rates increase by 95% over their previous platform, with continued optimization driving further gains of up to 312% within the first 12 weeks. "Whereas other platforms try to retrofit their platforms to support our business, On The Stage was the only solution that seemed built for time-based entry and location-based entertainment and also focused on the customer journey," says David Hutchinson, CEO of PATH Entertainment Group.

Case Studies

Montana Heritage Center

Our work at the Montana Heritage Center spans centuries of state history, bringing visitors face to face with compelling figures who call Montana home. Among the highlight experiences is the Mineshaft, an immersive “ride” experience complete with a motion platform, fully immersive media, sound, lighting, and scenic elements. Visitors step into the cage of a mining elevator and plunge deep into the Earth. Combining animation with digitally-enhanced archival mining footage from 1925, the displays transport people into the mines and into the lives of miners. Reinventing the use of archival imagery, the Mineshaft exhibit brings a bespoke piece of themed entertainment to the history museum space.

Ruckus!, Old South Meeting House

Setting a new standard for heritage tourism, our immersive show Ruckus! transforms a historic structure into a time machine. Located along Boston’s highly trafficked Freedom Trail, this 27-minute animated production at the Old South Meeting House is a history of the pivotal events of the American Revolution in Boston. Animated figures take over the walls of this National Historic Landmark, using projection mapping, transparent OLED screens, dramatic lighting, and surround sound to immerse visitors in this narrative while preserving the space’s original architecture. We love starting from a place of authenticity – drawing from historic objects, stories, buildings, and people – to create memorable, immersive experiences that become tourism highlights for both locals and visitors.
