Walt Disney Imagineering has unveiled the self-walking, free-roaming robotic Olaf coming to Disneyland Paris' World of Frozen.

Created by Imagineering's research & development unit, the new Olaf character appeared at this year's Nvidia GTC AI conference.

Olaf will feature in Disney Adventure World's new Frozen-themed land when it opens on 29 March. The robot is part of the daily 'Celebration in Arendelle' show, which takes place on a boat in the lagoon.

Kyle Laughlin, SVP of R&D and technology & engineering at Walt Disney Imagineering, said: "We’ve been hard at work to make sure Olaf is ‘show ready.’

"He is such a unique character — he is made of snow, moves in non-physical ways, and he has snowball feet."

To get Olaf to balance on an unstable surface in the boat, Imagineering used "deep reinforcement learning", Laughlin said, and "in just a matter of hours, [Olaf] earned his sea legs".

Disney Research is working with Nvidia and Google DeepMind on Kamino, a high-end robotics training simulator used behind the scenes to develop lifelike robots.

"Deep reinforcement learning through simulation allowed Olaf to learn to stand and walk in challenging environments, like on a boat, in a fraction of the time it would take a human child," said Laughlin.

Using Kamino, Laughlin added, "the speed at which we’re able to create new characters – and get them in front of our guests – is unprecedented".

"We are working to bring more emotive, expressive, and surprising characters to guests at our parks and ships around the world," he said.

As well as the robotic Olaf character, highlights in World of Frozen at Disneyland Paris include the Frozen Ever After boat ride, the Nordic Crowns Tavern restaurant, and the Rencontre Royale experience.

Elsewhere, Disney's Hollywood Studios is introducing a new Olaf audio-animatronic figure as part of the new Magic of Disney Animation experience.
