Dominique Barthelemy

Curator of Live Environment

Océanopolis Brest

Opened in 1990, Océanopolis in Brest, France, has educated the public about the history of the oceans. It fulfils this scientific mission using engaging and creative educational approaches.

The organisation is the first of its kind in Europe, and offers three zones and an otter trail that takes guests on a tour of the Earth’s oceans, through temperate, polar, and tropical habitats. This scientifically rigorous recreation spans 77 aquaria and 9,000 square metres, and features a one-million-litre shark aquarium.

Dominique Barthelemy serves as the aquarium’s conservateur en charge du milieu vivant (curator of live Environment). He joined the organisation in the late 1980s and has helped to shape the public aquarium into a world-class marine science centre, known for its scientific rigour, immersive public experiences, and commitment to conservation.

Barthelemy is also president of the Union des Conservateurs d’Aquariums (UCA) (French Union of Aquariums Curators) and is a member of the project steering committee for the World Coral Conservatory (WCC), which was established by the Scientific Center of Monaco and the Oceanographic Institute, Albert I of Monaco Foundation, to preserve corals in aquariums with the aim of re-implanting them in devastated areas.

He has also co-authored numerous scientific publications on subjects such as coral reproduction and deep-sea fauna.

“Dominique’s lifelong dedication to marine life, public education, and ethical aquariology has made him one of the most respected and impactful figures in the European aquarium community,” says one person who nominated Barthelemy.

“As President of UCA, Dominique has been a tireless advocate for collaboration among French aquaria, promoting best practices in animal care, sustainable sourcing, and professional development. He has represented the French aquarium community in international forums and has been a key voice in shaping ethical standards for the acquisition and care of marine species.”

“Dominique exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose. He has helped position aquariums not just as places of wonder, but as platforms for conservation, research, and global dialogue.”
