Downtown FabWorks, a leading provider of turnkey fabrication solutions for creative projects across the attractions industry, has announced the successful completion of its inaugural summer internship programme, a significant step in its dedication to workforce development and community involvement in New Orleans.
In August, interns Riley Dorsey and Jacoy Mitchell graduated, marking the start of what the company intends to develop into a sustained talent pipeline for the skilled trades.
Dorsey, a rising senior at Morris Jeff High School, and Mitchell, a rising senior at Booker T. Washington High School, participated through YouthForce NOLA. They gained hands-on experience in the metalworks department.

During the summer, both students completed a 110-hour internship that offered practical exposure to fabrication, welding, and professional shop procedures.
“At Downtown FabWorks, we believe our work extends beyond the environments we create,” says president & founder Daniel Krall. “As a New Orleans-based business, we consider it our responsibility to help develop the next generation of skilled craftspeople here in our city.”
Practical learning and professional skills
The internship programme was thoughtfully designed to focus on practical learning, mentorship, and active participation.
Guided by metalworks department lead Thor Carlson, Dorsey and Mitchell completed daily shop tasks, helped prepare materials, and observed and assisted with fabrication, assembly, and finishing.
They also received training in workplace safety, proper tool use, and professional skills like communication, teamwork, and accountability.

Both interns contributed distinct energy and viewpoints. Mitchell’s reflective and enthusiastic attitude complemented Dorsey’s inquisitiveness and proactive mindset, quickly establishing them as valued members of the FabWorks team.
This programme's launch results from years of careful planning and teamwork. Key team members like Krall, alongside director of people and culture Essence Banks and VP of operations Kyle Salzman, were essential in developing its framework, forming partnerships, and shaping its vision.

Downtown FabWorks collaborated with community partners to support the program's success. Organisations like the New Orleans Career Center (NOCC) and YouthForce NOLA play vital roles in offering students access to technical training, industry certifications, and practical experience.
Thanks to these partnerships, students such as Dorsey and Mitchell can explore careers in high-demand sectors and gain confidence in their futures.
The DFW internship programme shows that experiential learning is crucial to the future of fabrication and skilled trades. Through supporting youth and offering practical opportunities, Downtown FabWorks seeks to enhance the local workforce and benefit the industry overall.
