A TV and film history museum may open on the outskirts of North London, supported by a £2 million contribution from the local council toward its construction, reports ianVisits.
Called the Elstree Immersive Experience and Borehamwood & Elstree Film and TV Heritage Centre, the proposed attraction would open in Borehamwood, an area known for its historic TV and film studios.
In planning documents, the applicant describes the project as follows:
“The Elstree Immersive Experience (EIE) will be a ground-breaking, multi-sensory and interactive visitor attraction, designed to celebrate Elstree’s world-famous film and TV heritage.
"Its core purpose is to celebrate Elstree’s century-long cinematic legacy through the integration of cutting-edge immersive technologies.
"The Elstree Immersive Experience (EIE) is needed to celebrate, protect and showcase Elstree’s world-famous film and TV heritage, while driving skills, education and economic growth for the region.”
Brands involved in the project are likely to include EastEnders, Star Wars, The Muppets, Big Brother, Indiana Jones, A Space Odyssey, Holby City, and more.
Celebrating the UK's film heritage
It will be located in a former Sky TV studios building close to its new studios complex, with a provisional opening planned for late 2026. This timing aligns with the centenary of the UK’s first sound film, Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail, which was filmed at this location in 1929.
Hertsmere Council has approved a £2 million contribution to the project, funded through its Community Infrastructure Levy, ensuring that local property developers cover the cost instead of taxpayers. During the council meeting on 26th November, all councillors present supported the decision, except for two abstentions.
It would generate 60 to 150 local jobs and secure an extra £1 million in funding from the University of Hertfordshire and other suppliers.
Earlier this year, a multibillion-pound deal was agreed for a Universal resort in Bedfordshire. Universal has already submitted a planning application and says it is targeting a 2031 opening.
