The Helen Frankenthaler Foundation’s climate initiative has opened its sixth application cycle to US visual arts organisations.

First launched in 2021 as a $5m programme, the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative (FCI) has now awarded more than $17.5m to 249 grantees to date.

The programme supports visual arts organisations through assessment, planning and implementation to reduce their environmental impact via energy efficiency and clean energy projects.

It is overseen by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation and Environment & Culture Partners, a non-profit organisation dedicated to strengthening and broadening the environmental leadership of the cultural sector.

Grants to reduce environmental impact

"With each successive cycle, we continue to see how the arts sector is driving forward new models for sustainability," said Elizabeth Smith, executive director of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation.

“Arts organizations across the country are translating their values into action, developing projects that not only improve their energy performance but also model new ways of thinking about stewardship and resourcefulness."

Sarah Sutton, CEO of Environment & Culture Partners, said: "FCI grantees continue to show extraordinary leadership in implementing practical energy solutions that yield long-term benefits.

"Through the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative, we’re seeing how sustainability efforts in the arts can spark systemic progress across sectors, strengthening both institutions and the communities they serve while demonstrating that environmental progress and cultural vitality go hand in hand."

FCI portal open for submissions

The FCI portal is open for submissions, with draft applications for implementation grants due by 27 February, and all final applications due by 27 March at 5pm ET.

An informational webinar will take place on 22 January from 2–3pm ET.

Eligible applicants in the visual arts sector include museums, archives, higher education art schools, centres for study, artist residency programs, community art centres, artist-endowed foundations, and not-for-profit events like biennials, temporary exhibitions, and large-scale public art projects.

Previous grantees are eligible to apply for a new type of grant or project unless they have already received three FCI awards.
