Co-Founder and Creative Director
A Blanck Canvas
Joe Blanck is co-founder and creative director of A Blanck Canvas, an Australian creative studio specialising in large-scale puppetry, creature design and installations for events, theatre and public spaces.
Blanck has more than 20 years of experience across scenic art, creature design, fabrication and live entertainment. He spent six years at Creature Technology Company, working on productions including Walking with Dinosaurs, How to Train Your Dragon and King Kong, before co-founding A Blanck Canvas in 2013.
At the studio, he leads the creative development and production of large-scale puppets, creatures and installations, overseeing projects from initial concept and design through to construction, technical development and performance. Its work combines traditional sculpting, painting and puppetry with engineering and technology.
A Blank Canvas has developed projects for festivals, public events, theatre and cultural organisations, creating work that brings puppetry and creature design into public and performance spaces.
In 2024, Blanck was named a Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) Master, recognised for his work in puppetry, creature design and fabrication, and scenic paint. In January 2024, he delivered puppetry masterclasses at Spare Parts Puppet Theatre and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).
