Max Janse

Aquarium Curator

Burgers' Zoo

Max Janse, aquarium curator at Royal Burgers’ Zoo in the Netherlands, is a highly regarded expert in the field. As chair of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) Elasmobranch Taxon Advisory Group and president of the European Union of Aquarium Curators (EUAC), he has significantly influenced the development of standards and policies for the management of aquatic animals throughout Europe.

Janse has spearheaded initiatives to enhance sustainability and genetic diversity in aquarium populations, especially through his work on the regional collection plan and species studbooks for sharks and rays. His research, including the European census of elasmobranchs in public aquariums, has established standards for responsible population management. Under his leadership, Burgers’ Zoo achieved a world first: successful contraception in spotted eagle rays, exemplifying an ethical approach to population control that prioritises welfare and conservation.

Janse has also had a significant impact on coral research by transforming Burgers’ Ocean into a living laboratory that supports international projects, such as CORALZOO and the World Coral Conservatory. His team’s progress in coral propagation, husbandry, and ecosystem replication has strengthened the connection between public aquariums and scientific research, helping turn exhibit expertise into real reef restoration results.

Beyond his technical accomplishments, Janse is highly respected as a mentor and collaborator. He regularly uplifts others, fostering collaboration among institutions, supporting young curators, and advancing knowledge sharing within the aquarium community. His leadership illustrates how contemporary aquariums can effectively blend public engagement, research, and conservation.
