Monterey Bay Aquarium appoints Dr Jenny Gray as new CEO

From May, she will lead the attraction as the Nancy Burgermeister Chief Executive Officer

Dr Jenny Gray

Dr Jenny Gray will take over from founding director Julie Packard, who has led the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California since it opened in 1984.

Gray is recognised in the zoo and aquarium field for her expertise in animal ethics, welfare, and conservation. She has been the CEO of Zoos Victoria in Australia since 2007 and was also the president of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums for a two-year term.

“The opportunity to lead Monterey Bay Aquarium provides a platform for me to contribute to ocean conservation, steward another iconic institution, and take on a new professional challenge,” says Gray.

“Zoos Victoria will always hold a special place in my heart, and I leave with pride in our shared achievements and optimism for the future.”

Continuing the aquarium's pioneering work

Monterey Bay Aquarium enhanced public awareness of ocean issues and marine life. As one of the world’s top-ranked aquariums, it has welcomed over 72 million visitors, including more than 2.7 million students attending free educational programmes.

Through a combination of storytelling, science, and action, the aquarium has built a lasting institution that not only showcases the ocean’s complexity and resilience but also actively promotes its protection and restoration worldwide.

“We’re delighted to welcome Jenny; she is an experienced leader who brings strategic vision, scientific acumen, and a deep commitment to collaboration to her work,” says Tegan Acton, chair of the aquarium's board.

“We’re confident that she will continue the pioneering work in ocean conservation, marine life exhibits, and environmental education that the Aquarium is known for.”

Packard adds: “I can’t imagine a better person to come lead the Aquarium’s next chapter. We have a fantastic staff and volunteer team, a unique and powerful experience for our guests, and a critical mission to inspire conservation of the ocean.

"Under Jenny’s leadership, the Aquarium’s future is brighter than ever. I trust she will carry on the spirit of innovation that has supported our vision of a future where the ocean flourishes and people thrive in a just and equitable world.”

An experienced leader

Under Gray’s leadership, Zoos Victoria, an Australian non-profit and statutory authority overseeing Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary, and Kyabram Fauna Park, became a global leader in conservation, focusing on wildlife extinction prevention through research and habitat preservation.

Gray initiated community campaigns on issues such as reducing plastic use and advocating for sustainable palm oil. Her efforts have earned prestigious awards, including Australia’s Public Service Medal, the Order of Australia Medal, and the San Diego Zoo Global Conservation Medal.

She has significantly contributed to global species recovery projects, such as IUCN’s Reverse the Red, and has influenced ethics and animal welfare discourse through her publications.

Gray holds master’s degrees in ethics, engineering, and business administration, along with a PhD in ethics from the University of Melbourne.

Last year, Monterey Bay Aquarium raised more than $2 million for sea otter conservation in just two days by selling a vintage sea otter T-shirt worn by Taylor Swift.
