MOSI, Tampa's Museum of Science & Industry, has announced a new name, and debuted a new digital content lab and expanded spaces for STEAM learning.

Now called the Museum of Science & Innovation, MOSI has opened its new digital content lab, a space where students can create immersive movies for giant dome screens.

In addition, MOSI unveiled its expanded centre for STEAM learning, which now boasts an additional 30,000 square feet of classroom and lab space.

The expansion includes a cooking lab, three computer labs, and a makerspace with advanced tools such as 3D printers.

"Our new name, Museum of Science & Innovation, captures the trajectory and energy of MOSI as we look to the future," said John Graydon Smith, MOSI president and CEO.

"We’re in a rapidly changing world, and Tampa Bay can count on MOSI to help make sense of what’s happening now and what’s coming next."

MOSI growth plans

The new additions to MOSI are part of the institution's wider growth plans, which includes last year's opening of the Saunders Planetarium & Digital Dome Theatre – the largest planetarium in Florida and the second largest in the US.

“We’re not getting bigger simply for the sake of getting bigger," said Smith.

"MOSI is evolving and growing strategically because we’re seeing the demand in our community for a first-class partner in science and innovation.

"Our attendance has continued to climb, jumping up by nearly 35 percent with the opening of the Saunders Planetarium. The message is clear: MOSI is here to stay in North Tampa."

Last year, MOSI opened a new AI exhibit where guests can solve puzzles and paint with machines.
