Bosco Hernández Design Director  SFMoma

Bosco Hernández combines an innovative approach to design with a commitment to ethical and accessible practices. He is design director at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), where he leads a high-volume creative department that focuses on brand, graphic, environmental, and exhibition design.

Hernández has served as creative director for exhibitions including René Magritte: The Fifth Season, Nature × Humanity: Oxman Architects, and Julian Charrière: Erratic, and as art director for the SFMOMAs redesign in 2013. In addition, he was art director for SFMOMA’s Open Space, an interdisciplinary platform for artists and writers.

He holds an MFA from Werkplaats Typografie in the Netherlands, a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and his work has been shown at PS1 MoMA, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, and the International Poster and Graphic Design Festival in Chaumont, France.

In addition, Hernández is vice president of the 2024 SEGD Board and has served as a board member since 2022.

“Bosco’s work exemplifies a deep commitment to creating museum experiences that are not only visually striking but also ethically responsible and accessible to all,” says one person who nominated Hernández. “Bosco has been a pioneering force in sustainable museum design. His development of the first reusable gallery wall track system is a groundbreaking innovation that addresses the significant issue of waste in exhibition design.

“This system not only reduces environmental impact but also sets a new standard for how museums can approach sustainability in a practical and impactful way. Bosco’s work in this area demonstrates that creativity and sustainability are not mutually exclusive, but can be integrated to create lasting, positive change.

“As the chair of the SEGD Racial Justice Commission, Bosco has been a leading advocate for DEAI within the museum sector. His leadership in this role has been instrumental in pushing forward initiatives that ensure museum spaces are welcoming and accessible to all individuals, regardless of background or ability. Bosco’s dedication to equity and inclusion is evident in his design work, where he consistently prioritizes the needs and experiences of diverse audiences.”
