Jeremy Hoffman David and Jane Cohn Scientist Science Museum of Virginia

Jeremy Hoffman is the David and Jane Cohn scientist at the Science Museum of Virginia, home to hands-on exhibitions about wellness, innovation and physical sciences. Hoffman specialises in Earth science communication, data-driven and community-based participatory science, and content development for science centre exhibits. He was elected as an AAAS Fellow in 2021 and highlighted on the Grist 50 in 2020. Additionally, Hoffman has been written about in the New York Times, among other publications.

Hoffman produced climate science educational content in his role as the Science Museum of Virginia’s climate and earth science specialist, before taking on the role of chief scientist. He currently teaches Physical Geography for the Urban and Regional Studies Program in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University.

He earned his PhD in geology with a focus in paleoclimatology as a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. He also served as a Science Communication Fellow for the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) and the Mitchell Hamline College of Law.

Hoffman aims to connect people with their changing planet through community programmes, immersive exhibits and creative communication. His work with museum audiences to map urban heat islands in Richmond, Virginia has helped to increase equitable climate action. Hoffman found that the hottest areas of the city were often inhabited by the poorest residents and received the least public support. This prompted solutions such as adding tree cover and park spaces.
