Eureka! Merseyside children's museum vies for share of £15m northern regeneration fund

A bid to create a new Eureka! children’s museum in Liverpool is among eleven contenders vying for a share of the £15m Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund.

Eureka! Merseyside would build on the success of Eureka! The National Children’s Museum in Halifax.

The new museum would bring the award-winning concept to the Wirral waterfront, inspiring young people to explore science, technology, engineering, arts and maths.

The Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund has been set up to help build a lasting regional legacy from the Great Exhibition of the North.

Tranches of up to £4 million will be available to support major culture and tech capital projects.

The Humber Bridge as the world’s biggest digital artwork?

Other bids include a project entitled Constellations: Illuminating Yorkshire’s Coast which aims to create landmark light installations in six key locations on the North Yorkshire coast.

Another plans to create the world’s biggest digital artwork, transforming the Humber Bridge with over 70,000 individually controllable LED lights.

Lancashire wants to open Britain’s first museum to focus on the story of British popular entertainment and Blackpool’s role within it.

Leeds is hoping to transform the former Bradford Odeon cinema into a 4,000 capacity live music, entertainment and events venue.

The historic Stockton & Darlington Railway is the focus of the Tees Valley bid which seeks to open a major railway heritage visitor attraction as part of a wider programme to create a ‘Railway Heritage Quarter’.

Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Karen Bradley, described all eleven bids as ‘hugely exciting’ and said they demonstrated ‘the scale of cultural ambition across the region’.
