Powerhouse Parramatta, the biggest cultural infrastructure project in Australia since the Sydney Opera House, has announced an opening date.

Designed by Franco-Japanese architects Moreau Kusunoki and Australian architects Genton, the 30,000-square-foot museum is opening in western Sydney on 7 November.

Situated on the banks of the Parramatta River, the $A915 million ($641m) museum will launch with five exhibitions, three of which have been unveiled, as follows:

Task Eternal is a new aerospace exhibition featuring more than 850 objects, with loans from institutions including NASA and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

The Mall will look at the history and evolution of shopping malls, showcasing more than 560 objects from the Powerhouse Collection alongside international loans and 18 new commissions.

The Dark is designed for young visitors and inspired by a cast of a meteorite in the Powerhouse Collection.

In total, Powerhouse Parramatta will present more than 3,000 objects across science, technology, engineering, art and design.

"Powerhouse Parramatta is a museum built for the future, where local knowledge meets global perspectives," said Powerhouse CEO Lisa Havliah.

"We are thrilled to be opening our doors this November with five world-class exhibitions and a programme that is as bold and diverse as the communities it serves."

As well as exhibitions and public programming, Powerhouse Parramatta will include retail spaces, cafes and restaurants, learning and digital studios, a cinema, a modern theatre space, a rooftop observatory, and a productive Indigenous garden.

Powerhouse is the largest museum group in Australia with four locations across Sydney.

Powerhouse Parramatta is part of the group's A$1.3 billion infrastructure renewal programme, which includes updating the Powerhouse in Ultimo, expanding the research and public facilities at Powerhouse Castle Hill, and the ongoing heritage restoration of Sydney Observatory.
