New venue to showcase musical instruments, music-themed fine art, and photography

London’s first permanent gallery for musical instruments and fine art, called Muphoria, is set to open in Soho this week.

The new space features the work of artists such as Michael Spencer Jones, Illuminati Neon and David Corio. Pieces on display (and for sale) celebrate musicians including Oasis, Whitney Houston and Bob Marley.

Located in Berwick Street and opening on 1 December, Muphoria is a commercial art gallery for “music art”, according to a press release.

It will showcase musical instruments, music-themed fine art, and photography by emerging and established artists from across the globe.

“Pop art has exploded in popularity in recent years, with music-related artwork playing an increasingly large part,” said Tom Lawes, founder and managing director of Muphoria.

“Similarly, art is currently outperforming all other sectors in the luxury investment market with year-on-year growth of 30 percent.”

He added: “Muphoria aims to bridge the gap between the music and art world – not just by selling music-themed art but by inviting musicians and artists to collaborate on new work and new musical instruments.

“Berwick Street in Soho is an ideal location for us, as historically it has been a hub for both musicians and artists, along with being the home to numerous record retailers.”

Opening artists and artworks

  • Illuminati Neon, the creator of hand-blown neon art
  • Michael Spencer Jones, known for his album photography for banks such as Oasis and The Verve
  • David Corio, a music photographer
  • Maybury Guitars, a collection of sustainable guitars made from reclaimed materials and painted by a New York artist
  • Devil and Sons, the creator of custom guitars
  • Tape Deck Art, a British contemporary artist who paints and creates giant pin badges
  • Martin Grover, an artist producing vinyl record paintings and screen prints

In addition, Muphoria will display artworks celebrating the world’s most popular and influential musicians.

“A gallery specialising in music artwork is long overdue for central London and Berwick Street in Soho couldn’t be a more perfect location; not least because it’s where I did the cover photograph for (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?,” said Spencer Jones.
