Powerhouse Ultimo will close on 5 February for building and conservation works

Sydney’s Powerhouse Ultimo is to close for up to three years for an A$250m revitalisation. The New South Wales government has released concept designs for the project.

The new designs come after the NSW government scrapped a $481m rebuild of Powerhouse Ultimo, instead opting for a “heritage revitalisation” of the existing museum.

Powerhouse Ultimo will close on 5 February for building and conservation works. These are expected to take up to three years.

Per a press release, a staggered closure would increase the cost of the project. It would also result in a disrupted visitor experience over a prolonged period.

The Powerhouse plans include a new entrance that reveals the heritage facades of the original power station built in 1899 and the 1902 turbine hall.

Additionally, the 1901 Post Office building on Harris Street will be preserved and further integrated into the museum campus. Adjacent to the entrance will be a new green space for the public.

The project will be led by Infrastructure NSW. The design has been developed by Durbach Block Jaggers Architects in partnership with Architectus and landscape architects Tyrell Studio.

Arts minister John Graham said: “After nine years of divided opinions of this site, we are hopeful these new designs and a renewed focus on applied arts and sciences are more in line with the community’s expectations of this much-loved institution.”

New concept designs of Powerhouse plans

Powerhouse chief executive Lisa Havilah said: “The heritage revitalisation of Powerhouse Ultimo will ensure that there will be even more opportunities for our audiences to connect with and experience our collection and programs across the applied arts and applied sciences.

“This new concept plan will expand our ability to present international exhibitions and expand our learning and industry programs.”

In addition to the Powerhouse Ultimo development, a new flagship museum called Powerhouse Parramatta is being developed in western Sydney.
