Malcolm Reading Consultants is set to launch an open design competition for a memorial to Queen Elizabeth II in St James’s Park, London.
The memorial will celebrate the 70-year reign of the late queen, who died at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland on 8 September 2022.
Per a press release, it will “honour the late queen’s extraordinary life of service… offering space for celebration as well as reflection”.
New memorial at St James’s Park
The project site includes the area of St James’s Park adjacent to The Mall at Marlborough Gate, as well as the land surrounding the pathway down to the lake, including the Blue Bridge.
The two-stage competition is expected to launch in the coming weeks. Multidisciplinary design teams can register for launch notification here.
The competition is looking for teams made up of architects, artists, landscape architects, engineers, digital designers, planning consultants, heritage consultants, project managers and cost consultants.
The memorial project is being overseen by the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee, an independent body responsible for considering and recommending proposals for the memorial.
Open two-stage competition
It is jointly supported by the UK government and the Royal Household, and chaired by the late queen’s former private secretary, Lord Janvrin.
The committee is expected to share its recommendations with UK prime minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III in 2026.
Malcolm Reading Consultants has run more than 200 design competitions across the world for projects representing more than £38 billion of construction value.
The company is also managing a design competition for an expansion of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri.
