King Charles III reportedly has plans to turn Balmoral Castle into a new museum, with the first exhibition opening to the public as early as summer 2023.

Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland was the summer residence of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who died there on 8 September 2022.

An anonymous source told the Daily Mail that Balmoral Castle could open to the public with an exhibition paying tribute to the Queen. It would also explore her connection to Scotland.

The insider said: “Looking at the number of properties and the number of working members of the royal family, the King will be looking at the properties and asking: “What value does this give to the public?”

Royal palaces to become museums

The report comes after comments made by Daily Mirror royal expert Russell Myers. He told Lorraine on her ITV breakfast show that the King had already discussed converting the royal palaces.

“I think they should turn Buckingham Palace into a museum, I think they should,” Lorraine said.

“Interestingly enough, King Charles has always been saying this,” Myers replied. “He’s said he would want some of the royal palaces to be turned into museums because you don’t need them all.”

“I think it doesn’t really sit with the music at the moment, so it will be very interesting to see how he shifts into being a modern monarch in the current climate,” he added.

The new plans for Balmoral Castle are part of King Charles’ attempts to encourage a ‘slimmed down’ monarchy.
