Nicolas S. Roy

President and Executive Creative Director

Dpt.

Nicolas S. Roy is the president and creative director of Dpt., an award-winning studio crafting interactive experiences for immersive platforms and places, both physical and virtual.

Roy has led Dpt.’s creation of more than a hundred projects, almost half of which were developed for the museum sector.

“With a deep appreciation for art and culture and a strong expertise in technology, Nicolas has always sought to bridge these two worlds. He studied Computation Arts with the intention of combining his dual passions, and has since succeeded in convincing numerous cultural institutions to embark on immersive, tech-driven, and ambitious projects,” says one person who nominated him.

“In short, Nicolas is deeply committed to crafting interactive experiences for the museum world, driven by uncommon sensitivity and a genuine passion for culture.”

Roy’s versatile practice, combining art and technology, has led to projects with institutions such as the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA), which collaborated with Dpt. to develop an augmented reality experience for the exhibition Seeing Loud: Basquiat and Music.

The studio’s portfolio also includes work with Momenta | Biennale de l’image, the Montréal Science Centre, the Montréal Biodôme, the Contemporary Art Galleries Association of Canada, the Library of Parliament in Ottawa, and the Bank of Canada Museum, among many others. Several of these experiences have toured internationally, engaging audiences in countries including France and the US.

Additionally, Roy has led the creation of Dpt.'s Echo suite, a collection of technology-based tools including several artificial intelligence solutions. These tools help brands, entertainment and cultural entities to expand their reach and connect with new audiences.

Echo suite is being developed for multiple clients (PHI, Pointe-à-Callière, Canadian War Museum, etc.)

Roy has presented at SXSW, VR/AR Global Summit, Mutek, the World VR Forum and Unity for Humanity. He was also a member of the board of directors for digital experiences producers association, Xn Québec, which brings together more than 165 studios in the Quebec digital creation industry.
