Nikieia Johnson
Director
African American Museum of Southern Arizona
Nikieia Johnson is director of the African American Museum of Southern Arizona (AAMSAZ).
Passionate about preserving and sharing African American history, she believes museums must reach beyond their walls to stay relevant, accessible, and connected to their communities. Her relationships and collaborative spirit have made outreach one of AAMSAZ’s greatest strengths.
Johnson has represented the museum across Southern Arizona, connecting with audiences at libraries, schools, businesses, community groups, and public events. Her relationship-building has introduced new audiences to the rich, often underrepresented history of African Americans in the region and strengthened the museum’s role as a trusted community resource.
She has contributed to grants and projects advancing AAMSAZ’s digital transformation. Exploring technologies such as AI, Johnson aims to make museum experiences more engaging, accessible, and interactive. She continually seeks ideas, partnerships, programmes, and projects to strengthen the Museum and its community.
Curious and open to what museums can become, she focuses on helping smaller, emerging institutions like AAMSAZ reach their audiences creatively and resourcefully.
“What makes Nikieia an influencer is not simply what she accomplishes within the museum but how she connects the museum to the world around it,” says one nominator.
“Her energy is contagious, her commitment is unwavering, and her work demonstrates that preserving history is not only about looking back—it is also about using history, technology, education, and community connections to shape the future.”
