Hero Zone, a leading creator of immersive VR experiences, has announced a multi-year licensing deal with STUDIOCANAL, CANAL+’s in-house studio and Europe’s top film and series studio, for the iconic Terminator 2: Judgment Day IP.
This partnership will introduce Terminator: Uprising globally this September, starting with a release in 450 locations across 46 countries. It will be the first major Hollywood IP-based free-roam VR game to match the scale of cinematic releases, highlighting the increasing legitimacy and broad audience appeal of location-based VR.
This wide-scale rollout positions Terminator: Uprising to challenge records set by leading location-based virtual reality franchises. For example, Sandbox VR’s Squid Game Virtuals sold about 37,500 tickets monthly in its early stages.
With Hero Zone’s current network already providing around 150,000 paid plays each month through its existing titles—especially its popular zombie game Dead Ahead—Terminator: Uprising is expected to establish a new benchmark for Hollywood-based LBVR experiences.
Bringing an iconic IP to the VR space
Players worldwide will dive into the intense conflict between humanity and Skynet, feeling the drama, excitement, and thrill that have captivated audiences across generations. In a time when AI dominates headlines—from advances in autonomous systems to urgent ethical discussions—Terminator: Uprising provides an engaging and relevant chance to face a formidable AI, reflecting the global fascination with artificial intelligence.
“This is a significant milestone for Hero Zone and the location-based entertainment industry,” says Sebastian Malavasi, co-founder and CEO of Hero Zone VR.
“Launching simultaneously across 450 locations globally demonstrates the scalability of our platform and lets millions of Terminator fans worldwide step into the shoes of a resistance fighter to feel the adrenaline rush of battling a relentless AI-powered autonomous robot army.”
Valerie Rolandez-Barrios, SVP of IP licensing and partnerships from STUDIOCANAL, adds:
“We’re thrilled to partner with Hero Zone to bring the iconic Terminator universe into the immersive VR space. Their passion for the IP, dedication to authenticity, and ability to create memorable shared experiences make them an ideal collaborator to bring Terminator: Uprising to life for both long-time fans and new generations alike.”
The global debut of Terminator: Uprising will be at IAAPA Expo Europe in Barcelona, September 2025, giving attendees a first look. Afterwards, it will be available across Hero Zone’s international network. Hero Zone VR plans to keep it accessible by not charging premium fees to operators.
Hero Zone also recently revealed details of its partnership with Future Kid, a leading chain of FECs in Kuwait.
