SimEx-Iwerks, a pioneer in developing immersive cinematic experiences, and Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois, have announced the signing of the all-new Immersion Theater.

This next-generation 4D Experience is created to immerse guests in the heart of the aquatic world through a fully reimagined, multi-sensory journey. The new attraction is scheduled to open in spring 2026.

Since 2006, SimEx-Iwerks and Shedd Aquarium have collaborated to deliver engaging, family-friendly 4D experiences to millions of visitors.

This latest project represents a new phase in their nearly twenty-year partnership, featuring advanced technology, impressive visuals, and choreographed multi-sensory effects that immerse guests completely in the wonders of the aquatic world.

Educating and engaging guests

“Shedd has been an extraordinary partner, and we are honored to carry on our long-term partnership,” says Sean McAllister, senior vice president of attraction development at SimEx-Iwerks.

“This new experience will surround guests with the sights, sounds, and sensations of the aquatic world aligning nicely with Shedd’s mission.”

The Immersion Theater features a redesigned pre-show area with dynamic lighting, large underwater visuals, and interactive augmented reality animals that bring the oceans to life before the show begins.

Inside, the immersive atmosphere is enhanced by vibrant lighting and lively imagery displayed on the main screen and side walls, enveloping guests in a dynamic and colourful experience.

The Immersion Theater features SimEx-Iwerks’ innovative seat design, which provides effects like wind, mist, and scent. The side walls and built-in floor lighting add to the immersive experience by matching the show's mood and action.

Collectively, these features craft a memorable experience for guests.

“Guests to Shedd Aquarium have shown that they crave an experience that educates by engaging their senses,” says Pat Fraser, vice president of guest relations at Shedd Aquarium.

“Our new theater will provide even more of those sensory moments, while mirroring improvements we have made across our building to make a visit to the aquarium truly dynamic and unforgettable.”

This summer, SimEx-Iwerks announced it is expanding its family entertainment portfolio with the launch of a new nature-based product line that aims to bring families closer to nature through elevated outdoor experiences.

Attendees at IAAPA Expo 2025 next week can meet the team at booth #1652.
