BECK, a leading restoration and refurbishment fit-out specialist, has outlined its plans to continue working collaboratively with clients, designers, subcontractors, and local communities to deliver sustainable projects and increased social value across the museum sector.
BECK’s Sustainability Forum has made significant strides to support the environment including the recent plantation of over 450 mixed native hedge trees at West Horsley Place, a mediaeval manor house and estate close to the company’s Head Office and Workshop in Chessington, near London.
The company has also set ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions year-on-year and utilises further carbon offsetting through sponsorship of a sustainable wind farm project in Uruguay.
“Sustainability and social value are rightly playing a more prominent role in the museum sector. Our clients are providing targets and asking challenging questions around the impact that our projects will leave behind long after the exhibition lights are switched on,” says a company representative.
For one of its most recent projects, the Showtown Blackpool museum project, BECK developed a Social Value plan that is still active and expands as the project progresses to deliver several initiatives to benefit and support the local community on the Fylde in Lancashire.
Sustainable strategies
The firm’s commitment to strong values ensures BECK collaborates with charitable causes to carry out projects like beach clean-ups and litter picks throughout the project, utilising recycled materials in the fit-out work to promote a sustainable approach, and offering locals unique opportunities to train for and find employment.
The firm’s goal is to help lower unemployment and improve the capabilities of our future workforce. In order to start a joinery professional’s career, BECK has committed to giving a local college the tools they need, and throughout their course experience, students will receive guidance from the firm’s in-house workshop team.
“We have a responsibility and passion to deliver our projects mindfully; with the commitment to not only quality; but also considering the environment and impact on the surrounding communities in which we work, far beyond the installation of world-class Museums,” adds the company. “At BECK we will continue to ensure the wider legacy we leave behind remains a positive one.”
BECK recently celebrated its work on The Grand Egyptian Museum, a prestigious new display of priceless artefacts just outside of Cairo.
