Barco, the technology company focusing on innovative visualization solutions, is expanding its successful relationship with IMAX in order to collaborate on state-of-the-art laser light source technology around the world and reinforce the provision of quality laser cinema experiences to global audiences.
As a result, IMAX will be able to convert its systems, which number over 1000, to laser, over time. Furthermore, the companies have also reached a multi-year support agreement, giving IMAX a reliable solution.
Immersive cinema experiences
Barco and IMAX have worked together since 2012, during which time they have joined forces to create immersive, high-quality cinematic experiences on the world’s biggest screens. Barco’s RGS laser technology already supports IMAX’s largest screens in its multiplexes around the world. Now, the company will be able to move towards an all-laser solution.
Laser light source technology has many benefits, as Mark Welton, President of IMAX Theaters, explains:
“This new agreement with Barco is a strong endorsement of our joint continuous commitment to laser innovation in a mission to deliver the most immersive cinema experiences in all of our theatres.
“Barco’s laser light source technology combined with IMAX’s proprietary sound and projection technology further enables us to give our audiences an unforgettable all-round moviegoing experience that is also better for the planet.”
Reliable & efficient
Barco’s laser light source technology brings crisp, sharp images that stay constant over a longer period. Plus, these solutions reduce power consumption and increase efficiency, leading to a smaller carbon footprint as well as savings for the operator.
“It’s been a rough year for the cinema industry, but through this agreement, both IMAX and Barco show their unconditional commitment to the theatres worldwide,” says Nicolas Vanden Abeele, SVP for Barco Entertainment.
“We are honoured to continue our relationship with IMAX as their long-standing laser technology partner, enabling them to deliver exceptional cinema experiences.”
Earlier this month, Barco also announced that it has provided eight cutting-edge projectors for the newly renovated dome at the Planetarium of Brussels.
