Illumix partners with Six Flags to power AI & XR experiences at Camp Snoopy

News
Illumix tech Camp Snoopy Carowinds

Illumix, a technology company specialising in the creation of augmented reality (AR) and interactive immersive storytelling, has partnered with Six Flags to introduce a new spatial artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) layer to theme parks, starting with the newly launched Camp Snoopy at Carowinds.

Operators like Six Flags are selecting Illumix due to its industry-leading VPS (Visual Positioning System) and spatial intelligence technology, which has been developed over eight years by top experts in computer vision and AI. Illumix’s technology offers unmatched accuracy and is uniquely resilient to real-world variations in lighting and environment, making it the first AR platform truly practical for real-world deployment.

The company’s spatial intelligence platform provides real-time environmental insights and seamless integration, creating immersive experiences that effectively blend the physical and digital realms.

Hyper-precise immersive experiences

With Illumix’s technology, Camp Snoopy can tell stories in new ways that position the guest as the main character, letting them interact and affect the world around them.

Illumix is at the forefront of utilising spatial intelligence in AR to create hyper-precise immersive experiences that are rooted in the world and seamlessly integrate into their surroundings.

This technology represents a significant advancement over earlier versions of AR that rely on QR codes, lack contextual awareness, or depend on GPS and beacons. Such experiences often appear to “float” in space and fail to genuinely integrate into their environment, greatly limiting their immersion and creative potential.

By leveraging an advanced version of a VPS developed by Illumix over the past eight years, Camp Snoopy has been able to bring high-fidelity digital experiences into its physical environment.

Notably, these experiences work from all angles. They are accurate to the centimetre, as well as being localised to the environment in sub 1 second across devices. They are robust enough to work throughout the day with changing lighting conditions and even scene changes. The AR layers can be used for entertainment, but also for practical utility, such as wayfinding.

This project allows guests to engage in social, interactive experiences, while also allowing for more personalised experiences. The Illumix SDK is optimised and is integrated directly from the main apps and can be easily scaled across different Six Flags and Camp Snoopy park experiences.

Illumix is also privacy-centric, ensuring customer data is safe, and enterprises have no liability.

Merging the digital & physical

The Bird Watcher’s Clubhouse at Camp Snoopy demonstrates how this technology merges the digital and physical worlds to create new kinds of experiences.

During the experience, the AR Beagle Scouts skillfully move in and out of the birdhouse, playfully hiding from and interacting with guests. This high level of accuracy makes the digital experience remarkably lifelike; visitors witness the Beagle Scouts entering and exiting tiny doors and even hide behind the flag.

It transforms what could have been an overlooked set piece into a main attraction, allowing guests to connect with the characters and narratives on a deeper level, and it’s already emerging as one of the most popular experiences in the area.

Regarding Illumix’s goals for this collaboration, the company aimed to create interactive experiences in traditionally underserved areas, such as queue lines or locations near food and beverage. The team also sought to enable the Peanuts IP to share their stories in innovative ways, allowing guests to step into the narrative like never before and participate directly. These experiences represent a new type of theme park attraction.

A key goal was to provide a foundational piece of technology that could be scaled and utilised in various ways. These experiences can easily change with the seasons, and the digital layer can serve other activations (e.g., wayfinding or personalisation). Illumix’s platform is scalable, allowing for rapid expansion across parks.

Ken Parks, corporate director of creative development at Six Flags Entertainment, says:

“Illumix was the only technology stable and precise enough to bring our creative vision to life. Their platform wasn’t just powerful — it was scalable, making it the ideal foundation as we expand immersive experiences across more parks. Together, we’re helping define the future of location-based entertainment.”

Illumix adds:

“We’ve spent the last eight years transforming AR into a powerful, enterprise-grade tool — delivering sub-one-second localization with unmatched accuracy and adaptability across changing real-world conditions.

“Our focus isn’t just on building the best technology in speed, accuracy, and efficiency; it’s on architecting a full solution that is scalable, privacy-centric, and ready for real-world deployment at scale.”
