Disneyland is set to start building its new Coco boat ride, as Walt Disney Imagineering has submitted its first plans for the attraction.
The Los Angeles Daily News reports that Walt Disney Imagineering has submitted early plans to the Anaheim Public Works department to start work on the world’s first Coco attraction.
Disney California Adventure’s upcoming Coco ride is based on the 2017 Pixar animated film and was announced last year at Disney’s D23 fan event.
The new attraction at Disney California Adventure will take guests to the Land of the Dead with Miguel, Hector and other Rivera family members.
Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney’s theme parks and experiences division, said at the time: “We’re bringing our skeletal cast of characters to life in a big way through the latest audio-animatronics technology.
“These figures will appear in ways you’ll have to see to believe.”
World’s first Coco ride coming to Disneyland
The ride will be built near Paradise Gardens Park and Pixar Pier, in areas that are largely backstage at the moment, Disney said in a previous blog post.
Per the Los Angeles Daily News, the early plans call for work on the public right of way along Disneyland Drive and Katella Avenue on sidewalks, curbs, gutters, trees, planters, landscaping, irrigation and fencing.
Disneyland has not announced an opening date for the new Coco ride, but it’s expected to debut in 2027 or 2028.
The attraction part of the $1.9 billion DisneylandForward expansion plan, which will also include a new Avatar experience at Disney California Adventure.
Last month, Disneyland revealed that it is transforming an area of the current Hollywood Backlot into the Avatar destination.
In addition, plans are underway for a new parking structure and transportation hub to be built on the east side of Disneyland Resort, on a portion of what currently serves as the Manchester cast member parking lot.
Construction on the parking structure and transportation hub is due to begin in autumn 2026.
Earlier this year, Disney California Adventure started building its Avengers Campus expansion, which includes two new attractions and will double the size of the Marvel land.
