Later this year, the Spookslot team will supervise the 44-year-old attraction‘s final show.

Efteling is saying goodbye to its Haunted Castle, or ‘Spookslot’, on 4 September. The haunted house is being replaced with a spooky themed area and indoor attraction called Danse Macabre.

On 4 September, Efteling‘s Spookslot team will supervise the 44-year-old attraction’s final show before closing the doors for the last time.

“We are very sad to have to say goodbye to our special workplace, where we have worked with great pleasure and passion day in and day out for many years,” said Djordy Wolffensperger, an employee at Spookslot.

“But of course, we are looking forward to the new attraction. I can’t wait until we once again can welcome visitors in the new sinister area,” Wolffensperger added.

Later this year, Efteling’s shops will be selling a special Haunted Castle pin and photo book. Also, the Spookslot attraction will be available to explore in virtual reality (VR).

In addition, the theme park will release a walk-through video that takes viewers through the experience. Both offerings will be published on Efteling’s YouTube channel.

Between midnight and 6am on September 3 and 4, Efteling is hosting a unique ‘Ghost Night’ experience, with 360 winners able to visit the haunted house for the last time.

Efteling’s new eerie zone will be home to themed retail, dining and entertainment. It will cover an area of 17,000 square metres and be anchored by the new indoor attraction.

“For Danse Macabre, I was inspired by the original sketches and ideas for the Spookslot haunted house, among other things,” said Efteling designer Jeroen Verheij.

“But it will be all new: we will completely immerse visitors and they will experience the Danse Macabre like never before,” he said. “We will keep the creepy theme and extend it through all the details in the themed area.”
