Merlin is building three Legoland resorts in China

Merlin Entertainments has provided a construction update for Legoland Shenzhen Resort, a new destination in China with a theme park, water park and three hotels.

John Jakobsen, Merlin’s chief strategic portfolio development officer, visited the construction site of Legoland Shenzhen earlier this week alongside his team.

He said: “Looking back over the past year, the construction of Legoland Shenzhen Resort has been progressing positively, brick by brick, with a strong focus on creating a safe and high-quality experience filled with creativity and imagination for everyone.”

Construction of the themed areas in the resort’s Legoland theme park are nearing completion “in terms of civil construction”, Jakobsen added.

“The most signature area of these, Legoland Creative World, has seen positive progress,” he said. The main structure in this zone, which is the largest building in the whole park, has now entered the topping-out phase of construction, said Jakobsen.

“Anticipating 2025, Legoland Shenzhen Resort is entering an accelerated phase, constantly building for fun,” he added.

Additionally, building work on the surrounding transportation and infrastructure for Legoland Shenzhen is underway.

Legoland Shenzhen is the first international IP-based family theme park resort in the Greater Bay Area, Merlin said in a press release.

Merlin’s Legoland expansion in China

The destination will include a theme park, a Legoland water park, and three themed hotels. The theme park will offer more than 100 interactive rides, shows and attractions.

In 2023, Merlin launched a partnership with Chinese multinational technology conglomerate Tencent to create “the ultimate theme park experience of the future” at the new Legoland resorts in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Sichuan.

Scott O’Neil, former CEO of Merlin, said the company is growing its presence in the Chinese market and will develop “the biggest and most innovative Legoland resorts in the world”.

Merlin recently announced a summer 2025 opening for Legoland Shanghai Resort.
