Unique ride offers a twisted track for family thrills

Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC), a world-leading roller coaster manufacturer, has shared details of its new Wild Moose Family Coaster, a reinvention of the classic wild mouse coaster.

This innovative new product draws from the tradition of the midway attraction and uses the firm’s patented technology to offer a redesigned ride experience with family-friendly thrills that capture the signature RMC ride experience.

“We are thrilled to now introduce the next RMC product which greatly enhances and expands our reputation as amusement industry pioneers,” comments the firm.

The coaster has been enthusiastically welcomed by the attractions industry, and was awarded first place for Best New Product Concept, Attraction in the IAAPA 2023 Brass Ring Awards.

Unique twists & turns

The new Wild Moose Family Coaster continues RMC’s tradition of innovative coaster development. This reimagined classic utilises the firm’s unique I-Box track system and completely redesigned trains. As a result, it offers an experience that is suitable for families, with rider comfort as a top priority.

A standout feature of the Wild Moose Coaster is its ability to run on almost any track layout configuration. RMC says: “With our patented I-Box system, we are able to fabricate track so twisted that it almost appears deformed! This gives us an unparalleled ability to introduce new ride experiences and wonky visuals that can only be described with one word: fun!”

RMC has scaled down the I-Box track in order to make such configurations possible, and the ride also takes its tight turns at a slower speed. This means that the ride is suitable for the whole family.

“The wonky visuals of the track, paired with RMC’s unique approach to ride dynamics, work together to ensure that the Wild Moose Coaster will leave guests giggling all the way home,” explains the firm.

The updated Wild Moose is unique in that it runs with a full train, rather than individual cars. Its train was developed in response to the extremely twisted track and has an industry-leading turn radius with a design which prioritises rider comfort and aesthetics. The trains consist of up to seven cars, with two riders per car, and include a restraint system designed for easy passenger loading and unloading.

A great deal

The Wild Moose has been designed to provide exceptional benefits for operators – it is cost-effective, suitable for a compact footprint, and easy to maintain.

“Wild Mouse roller coasters are scattered all across the globe, and many of them are nearing the end of their service lives. RMC sees a unique opportunity to continue our legacy of reinvention by providing a reasonably priced attraction to replace these ageing coasters, says the firm.

“In spirit with the business practices that brought us here, we’ve ensured the new ride experience will improve on the original in every aspect. As an added bonus, the ride can be installed on the same slab foundation as the original.”

The Wild Moose Coaster was developed to fit into even the smallest spaces in a park. RMC has designed the ride with minimal touchdown points to reduce foundation loading. It can also produce the coaster with spreader beams so the ride does not require any new foundations, reducing the cost of installation.

In addition, the ride has been designed to minimise maintenance costs. It uses a booster lift hill, so there is no chain or significant engine area to maintain. The booster lift also enables the train to function with just a brake fin underneath, eliminating the need for maintenance-intensive anti-rollback devices or chain engagement regions. The ride also uses simple block sections which remove the need for a complex control system.

RMC says: “Maintaining a complicated mechanical system can get costly, and we wanted to ensure that The Wild Moose was not only a great deal to purchase, but also to maintain and operate.”
