Shanghai Disneyland is building a “separately themed attraction” next to Zootopia

Shanghai Disney Resort has provided a construction update for its third hotel and teased another new land following the launch of Zootopia late last year.

Shanghai Disney broke ground on the new themed hotel in August of last year. Now, the project management team has completed piling work, a key phase aead of the start of superstructure building work.

The new hotel will have 400 rooms and joins the 420-room Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and the 795-room Toy Story Hotel at the Chinese resort.

Located on the shores of the Wishing Star Lake, the new hotel includes indoor and outdoor amenities and programming, new dining, shopping and entertainment experiences, and immersive spaces showcasing Disney characters and stories.

As for the new land, Shanghai Disney has started “initial preparation work for construction of a separately themed attraction to be located within Shanghai Disneyland, adjacent to Zootopia”, according to a press release.

The project is in the initial planning stage, and resort shareholders and management will provide more updates as work progresses.

Shanghai Disney said in the release: “The latest expansion plans demonstrate Shanghai Disney Resort’s commitment to providing new offerings and developing the resort as a multi-day tourism destination for guests from near and far.”

Shanghai Disney Resort is a joint venture between the Walt Disney Company and Shanghai Shendi Group.

Shanghai Disneyland expansion plans

Since opening in June 2016, Shanghai Disneyland has been expanded twice, first in April 2018 when the Toy Story Land opened, and then in December 2023 with the new Zootopia-themed land.

The latter is an immersive mammalian metropolis with a new trackless dark ride called Zootopia Hot Pursuit, a new interactive character experience, innovative entertainment, and themed retail and F&B.

“Zootopia is a place where the outside world falls away as you enter an immersive, story-driven environment brimming with rich detail and fun everywhere you look,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney’s parks division.
