New coaster opens at Six Flags Great America this weekend

Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois has set an opening date for Wrath of Rakshasa, the steepest and most inverted dive coaster in the world.

Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, the new record-breaking dive coaster is opening at Six Flags Great America this weekend, on 31 May.

Wrath of Rakshasa features a 171-foot drop at a 96 degree angle, with a cliffhanger just before the drop. This is described as the world’s steepest.

Also, the new coaster provides five inversions – more inversions than any other dive coaster in the world.

Additionally, the 180-foot-tall ride boasts speeds of nearly 67 miles per hour and 3,239 feet of track.

“Wrath of Rakshasa promises an unforgettable experience that will test your courage and leave you breathless,” Six Flags Great America says on its website.

Park president John Krajnak said last year: “Six Flags Great America continues to push the limits of innovation and thrills, as we introduce the world’s steepest drop with the most inversions on a dive coaster.

“Wrath of Rakshasa joins our already impressive lineup of record-breaking roller coasters and attractions at the park, demonstrating our commitment to delivering cutting-edge experiences for our guests.”

In more news, Six Flags is eliminating all park president positions at its 27 amusement parks as it lays off 10 percent of full-time employees across the company.

“Six Flags Entertainment recently moved to a new regional operating structure,” Six Flags told the Orange County Register.

The changes come after last year’s merger between Six Flags and Cedar Fair, which formed North America’s largest amusement park operator.
