Qiddiya has broken ground on the first Six Flags attraction in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Qiddiya has awarded a contract worth SR3.75 billion ($1 billion) to Bouygues Bâtiment International (BBI) and Saudi Almabani General Contractors to construct Six Flags Qiddiya in Saudi Arabia.

After signing the agreement, Qiddiya Investment Company (QIC) held a ground breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on the first Six Flags attraction in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Six Flags Qiddiya will cover 320,000 square metres, and will house 28 rides and attractions across six immersive lands. These are: The City of Thrills, Discovery Springs, Steam Town, Twilight Gardens, Valley of Fortune and Grand Exposition.

Falcons Flight is the world’s tallest, fastest and longest coaster, Sirocco Tower is the world’s tallest, free-standing shot tower ride, and Gyrospin is the world’s tallest pendulum ride.

Spitfire is the world’s tallest inverted top hat coaster, and Iron Rattler is the world’s tallest tilt coaster.

“With this signing, we are embarking on major steps towards building the kingdom’s future destination for entertainment, sports and the arts,” said Abdullah Al-Dawood, board member and managing director at QIC.

“Six Flags Qiddiya will be a key entertainment attraction for Riyadh, the kingdom and the world at large,” Al-Dawood added.

The City of Thrills is an area for thrill rides, while Discovery Springs is an aquatic-themed zone featuring an interactive ride called Sea Stallion. Steam Town’s rides include the Iron Rattler Mine Train, Steam Town Falls Water Coaster, and Bull Rider.

World’s tallest, fastest and longest coaster

Twilight Gardens features colourful flowers and friendly creatures, as well as the Twilight Express Coaster and Critter Chase dark ride. Valley of Fortune includes a triple-launch coaster called Spitfire, while Grand Exposition houses the Colossus hybrid coaster.

“We are pleased that our first theme park outside North America will be part of what will become the iconic entertainment destination in the kingdom,” said Selim Bassoul, president and CEO of Six Flags.

“Six Flags’ brand of thrills and entertainment is perfect for the youthful population around Riyadh and in the Middle East, and our park will help the city’s quest to become one of the best places to live in the world.”
