Universal Orlando will offer the highest starting wage at a major Orlando-based theme park.

Universal Orlando Resort is increasing the starting wage of its employees to $17 per hour from 4 June.

Universal Orlando’s pay will rise from the current rate of $15 to $17 per hour, making it the highest starting wage at a major Orlando-based theme park.

Karen Irwin, president and CEO of Universal Orlando Resort, announced the change in a letter to employees (via Florida Politics).

“We deeply believe in our mission to provide an inclusive environment where our team members are proud to work and we remain committed to that focus,” said Irwin.

“Therefore, we continually evaluate our compensation, perks, and benefits programs and why we are committed to engaging with and listening to you.”

The wages for part-time and full-time staff will increase to a base rate of $17 per hour. Wages will also rise based on new rates and an employee’s time with the company.

“To that end, effective June 4, 2023, we are not only increasing our starting base rate to $17 per hour, but we are increasing many of our starting rates across the business,” Irwin added.

“In addition, many team members will receive an increase based on the new rates and their time with the company.”

Walt Disney World, which is in contract negotiations with its unions, currently pays a minimum wage of $15 per hour.

“We aspire to be the employer of choice in this market, providing an inclusive environment where team members are proud to work, have opportunity to grow and feel a real sense of purpose and belonging.”

Universal has a host of exciting projects coming up, including Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood and Epic Universe at Universal Orlando.

The company is also opening a new year-round horror attraction at AREA15 in Las Vegas and a family-friendly theme park in Frisco, Texas.
