Universal Studios Hollywood is closing two long-running shows, Universal’s Animal Actors and the Special Effects Show, to make room for “a future attraction”.
Both shows will close on 8 January 2023. The Production Central Store, which can be found between the shows’ theatres, will also shut.
Information about the new attraction in the park’s upper lot remains under wraps. However, the area could house a Fast & Furious-themed roller coaster.
Universal’s Animal Actors, launched in 2007, stars elite trainers and animal actors as they showcase their tricks of the trade.
Animal Actors and Special Effects Show to shut
These animal actors have starred in films including Evan Almighty, Night at the Museum, Ace Ventura Pet Detective and Dr. Doolittle.
PETA’s director of captive animal welfare, Debbie Metzler, said in a statement: “The curtain can’t close soon enough on this cruel relic, which has spent decades forcing animals from a wretched supplier to perform tricks in front of frightening, noisy crowds.
“PETA is celebrating Universal Studios’ kind decision and calling on the company to begin a new animal-free era at both of its parks.”
The Special Effects Show features Hollywood’s best stunt performers, as well as the practical effects and cutting-edge technology used in blockbuster movies.

Opened in 1964, Universal Studios Hollywood is home to world-class rides and attractions such as The Simpsons Ride and Jurassic World – The Ride.
Universal Orlando is also shutting five attractions in Universal Studios Florida’s KidZone area to make room for “new family entertainment” based on “beloved animated characters”.
Closing on 16 January are Fievel’s Playland, Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster, Curious George Goes to Town, DreamWorks Destination, and Shrek and Donkey’s Meet & Greet.
Meanwhile, the first Super Nintendo World in the US will open in 2023 at Universal Studios Hollywood. The land’s signature ride, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, will be located in Bowser’s Castle.
