Amusement Parks: Lost City of Atlantis soon to be Uncovered

News

Whether fact or fiction, the idea of a lost, but highly advanced civilization has captured the interest of people for centuries…now The Lost City of Atlantis is being recreated at SEA LIFE™ Aquarium at LEGOLAND® California Resort, opening August 11.

The 175, 000 gallon ocean display features a 10-foot-tall, 1700 pound statue of Poseidon, amazing sea creatures, and, of course, a seven foot-long LEGO® submarine and diver made of thousands of bricks.  More than 72 LEGO models made of tens of thousands of bricks are being created by LEGOLAND California’s Master Model Builders specifically for SEA LIFE.

“I’m really excited to see the reaction of sharks, sting rays, snappers and other creatures to this underwater world full of LEGO models, ” said Chris Spaulding, Senior Curator of the Aquarium. “You won’t be able to see anything like this anywhere else in the United States.  From front to end, SEA LIFE is focused solely on children and will inspire them to get excited about a world they have never seen before.”

A 35-foot-long acrylic ocean tunnel allows guests to walk through and experience the “lost city” without ever getting wet. More than a standard aquarium, SEA LIFE provides an educational and interactive dynamic unlike any other. Featuring play zones, fun facts and quiz trails, SEA LIFE is designed to be a child’s guide to the life of the sea and ultimately, their first aquarium experience.

A passionate conservationist and campaigner, SEA LIFE works to increase awareness of the importance of safeguarding the seas and their inhabitants.  Children can learn about the SEA LIFE “Save Our Seas” (SOS) campaign which educates them on problems facing the world’s oceans and empowers them to do something to solve them.  The SOS campaign is a growing force in marine conservation, research and rescue that has achieved great success across Europe.

In May, SEA LIFE launched the SOS poster project, inviting children ages 4 to 12 to creatively explore their ideas for protecting our seas and the creatures who live in them. Children will compete using any two-dimensional medium from crayons and markers to paint, ink or pencil to illustrate their best idea for protecting our oceans. Children wishing to enter must submit their entry by June 30. For additional details and entry information, visit www.LEGOLAND.com.

Soon to come, exciting landmarks in the building process such as filling water into the Lost City of Atlantis and, of course, seeing the first creatures enter their new SEA LIFE home. Check the Web site for information and images.  A special preview center and the Ocean Journey Café are scheduled to open July 1 to give eager guests a taste of the SEA LIFE experience.

SEA LIFE Aquarium at LEGOLAND California Resort will be the 29th SEA LIFE Center to open in the world.  As of its opening in August, SEA LIFE Centers around the world operate in nine countries on two continents, bringing visitors nose-to-nose with a wide range of sea creatures.
