Architects Kay Elliott have been recognised with a commendation at the 2016 Civic Trust Awards held earlier this month at the Globe Theatre, London for their work on the Abbey Sands development in Torquay.
The Civic Trust Awards is the longest standing architectural and built environment awards scheme in Europe and celebrates outstanding architecture, planning and design.
Abbey Sands is a mixed-use waterfront project comprising restaurants, 5* holiday units and luxury private apartments. Kay Elliott have drawn inspiration from the Art-Deco tradition of British seaside resorts and the sweep of picturesque Tor Bay, to create a contemporary building design to complement the ‘English Riviera’
Since its completion last year, Abbey Sands has been honoured with four awards including the LABC National finalist, Michelmores Property Awards 2015 Building of the Year and Best Mixed-Use Development at the International Property Awards.
Commenting on the award, Jan Tribble, Associate at Kay Elliott said, “The Civic Trust Awards recognise the very best in architecture, planning and landscape internationally so we are honoured to have received this commendation for the Abbey Sands development. What was previously an unloved part of Torbay is now bustling with life. We feel the building has made a really positive contribution to Torquay’s waterfront and celebrates what we love about the English Riviera.”
