Clearwater Marine Aquarium Releases Its First Documentary

News

Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) announces the release of its first-ever documentary. "Winter, The Dolphin that Could" recounts the true story of Winter, the tailless dolphin, who was not expected to survive after her tail was caught in a crab trap line and eventually fell off. The film takes viewers on an extraordinary journey through her rescue, fight to stay alive and extensive rehabilitation. It also includes behind-the-scenes video of her tail. The documentary also highlights how Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics developed a one-of-a-kind prosthetic tail. The gel in Winter’s tail is now used to ease pain for humans with prosthetics. The film closes with a moving music video set to Martina McBride’s song "Anyway."

The documentary features the heartwarming story of Katrina Simpkins, a 10-year-old girl with a prosthetic leg. Meeting Winter changed her life and inspired Katrina to be proud of her prosthetic. Katrina’s prosthetic leg and Winter’s tail are now made by Hanger.

The documentary is being sold exclusively at SeeWinter.com, but will soon be available at retail outlets nationwide. The film was produced by an Emmy Award-winning team, whose prior work includes NBC’s Ironman Triathlon show and the upcoming Ted Williams documentary.

"We are amazed at how Winter’s story has impacted so many people all over the world, " said CMA CEO David Yates. "We hope this documentary reminds people they can do anything they set their mind to. Winter says you can."

The documentary is presented by Clearwater Marine Aquarium and Gabby Productions, in conjunction with Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and Florida Atlantic University. Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a Florida non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, dedicated to marine life rescue, rehabilitation and release, and environmental education.

Winter’s story will also soon be available in book form. Winter’s Tail: How One Little Dolphin Learned to Swim Again is the inspiring new children’s book by  New York Times best-selling authors Craig, Juliana and Isabella Hatkoff. Published by Scholastic and Turtle Pond Publications, in collaboration with Clearwater Marine Aquarium, the book will be available this fall. The officially authorized book delivers an important message of hope, friendship and universal acceptance. Stay tuned to www.SeeWinter.com for more information on the release date.
