It wasn’t summer school for 260 underserved first through sixth graders. It was Camp Invention, a program that teaches curious children about problem solving, creativity and invention. Since 2000, Rohm and Haas Company has provided more than $250, 000 to support 100 Camp Invention programs and 40 after-school Club Invention programs across the United States. This summer, five local camps sparked the imaginations of hundreds of young students, including dozens who attended on scholarship thanks to Rohm and Haas.

In addition to the scholarships, leaders from Rohm and Haas visited the programs and conducted highly-visual, hands-on science demonstrations. This year’s support extends programs into Bristol, Pa., Philadelphia, and Montgomery County. In celebration of Dr. Hunt’s being nominated president of the American Chemistry Society in 2007, the company made a special three-year commitment to support camps in the Wissahickon School District. Local sites include Mattison Avenue Elementary and Wissahickon Middle schools in Ambler, Pa., the Bridesburg Police Athletic League at the Cozen Center and John Fitch Elementary School in Bristol, Pa.

Camp Invention teaches children to think outside the box through hands-on, experience-based challenges such as building safety devices for cars and skateboards, creating new, exciting models for amusement park rides, putting a spaceship back together after crash landing on the fictional planet ZAK and figuring out the best way to save Sludge City from pollution.

Rohm and Haas Company’s Responsible Neighbor programs work to advance the economic, social, and environmental quality of life in the communities where Rohm and Haas operates and its employees live through giving, volunteerism and community dialogue. They also promote science, technology and mathematics education, environmental and safety concerns.
