Merlin Ticketing Man Joins RefTech

Andy Povey who was responsible for Merlin ticketing operations until June 2008, has joined RefTech, a specialist supplier of ticketing systems for attractions and theme parks. Povey spent 15 years with various attractions that all became part of the Merlin empire before taking on responsibilty for ticketing systems across all Merlin attractions.

Highlights of Povey’s career to date include installing the first ticketing system at Rock Circus in November 1996 and a separate system at Madame Tussaud’s in 1999. When the London Eye opened, Povey managed the installation of their admissions system and was part of the project team with special responsibility for configuration and installation of the ticketing system, construction of the web sales application and training of staff.

In recent years he has consulted on ticketing for the opening of Heide Park Germany, Madame Tussaud’s Las Vegas, New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai,
Washington DC and Berlin. When he left Merlin he was responsible for the implementation, support and development of systems selling 32 million
tickets a year through walk up, call centres and the Internet.

Managing Director of RefTech, Simon Clayton, said, ‘It must be blatantly obvious that we are delighted to have been able to attract somebody of Andy’s calibre. There can be few people in the world who can match him and we take his decision to join us as a massive compliment.’

Povey says that he decided to leave Merlin in June 2008 when it became apparent that there was no supplier offering a distributed ticketing system that supported local management autonomy and central reporting without massive infrastructure and consequent costs. ‘I was convinced there was a better way and spent three months researching the market and discussing possibilities with suppliers. When I met the team from RefTech I realised that I had found a company that had both the technical skills and the ability to understand the particular needs of the attractions industry. Once I had seen what they already had and what was in the pipeline I had no hesitation in joining them.’
