Robert Kerr – Industry pioneer passes away

News

It is with great sadness that Jonathan Barker announces that SK Films Director, Co-founder, shareholder and friend Robert Kerr passed away in Toronto.

He was 80 years old. Robert was of course well known to many in the Giant Screen industry, having been a co-founder and long-time CEO of Imax Corporation and having dedicated so much of his energy, intelligence, patience, resourcefulness, wit and wisdom to the creation and success of Imax Corporation and the IMAX® brand. We were deeply honoured that, following the sale of his interest in Imax Corporation, Robert chose to co-create SK Films to continue to have a presence in the Giant Screen world he contributed so much to creating. His commitment to quality and integrity stand as touchstones for the industry and certainly for us at SK. Robert was the quintessential gentleman, with a deep passion for both art and science. He was an exceptional person and was our champion. He will be deeply missed.

We send our heartfelt sympathies to Robert’s family. Of course his daughter Barbara Kerr, who has edited numerous outstanding Giant Screen films, and his son-in-law Peter Thillaye, who continues to design the sound for many of the most significant and award-winning Giant Screen films being produced, are also well known to many in the industry.

Tributes will certainly follow from multiple sources, but we at SK wanted all of our colleagues in the industry to be aware of the passing of one of the true pioneers and pillars of our industry.
